Coping with stress when some of it comes with a deadline

There are two kinds of stress that feel almost identical in your body and need completely different responses. The first kind is load: too much work, too little sleep, too many people needing you at once. Rest, boundaries and help usually ease it.

The second kind is attached to a date. A court notice, a tax letter, a medical decision, a contract that renews on Friday. Breathing exercises can help you think straight, and that matters. They won’t move the date.

This section is about telling those apart and responding to each one well. We write about managing uncertainty, sleep under pressure, and the moments when stress is a sign you need a doctor, a lawyer or a counselor rather than another tip. We don’t treat mindfulness as a cure, and we won’t tell you to ignore a deadline because worrying about it feels bad.

Next on the list: how to get started with stress when you’re too stretched to read a long guide.
