Life transitions: the stretch between the old routine and the new one
Every big change comes with an official start date. The move-in day, the final paperwork, the first day at the new job, the night you bring the baby home. The adjustment never gets a date. It runs for months, sometimes years, and most of it happens in the in-between.
This section is about that in-between. Relationship changes, caregiving for a parent, becoming a parent, moving countries or just across town, a career change you chose or one that chose you. We look at the practical side first: rebuilding a weekly routine, deciding which old commitments to drop, and figuring out who belongs in your support system now.
We’re skeptical of advice that treats every transition as a growth opportunity. Some changes are losses, and they deserve to be treated as losses before anyone asks what you learned. You can grieve the old life and still make a sensible plan for the new one.
On our list: how to get started when a transition lands all at once, and what tends to help people early on.
